The Ōtūmoetai Football Academy provides a focused development pathway for players who are motivated, committed and ready to take their football further.
Players are supported to:
Improve their technical skills
Build confidence and decision-making
Develop stronger game understanding
Train in a more competitive, learning-focused environment
Through structured sessions, quality coaching and regular development opportunities, the Academy helps young footballers build strong habits and work towards Pre-Academy, TDP, youth and future senior football pathways.
Who is the Academy for?
The Academy is for motivated players who show a strong interest in improving their football and are ready for a more focused development environment.
What is the difference between community football and Academy football?
Community football is open to players who want to play, develop and enjoy the game in a team environment. Academy football is for players seeking extra challenge, more structured training and a stronger focus on individual development.
Do players need to trial or attend ID sessions?
For selected development teams and pathways, players may need to attend ID sessions to be considered. These sessions help coaches understand each player’s ability, attitude, commitment and readiness for the programme.
What are coaches looking for?
Coaches look for players who show ability, effort, focus, commitment, coachability and a positive attitude. It is not just about current skill level, but also a player’s willingness to learn and improve.
How often do Academy players train?
Training schedules vary depending on the age group and programme. Some players may have weekly Academy sessions alongside team training and weekend games.
Where are sessions held?
Most Academy and development sessions are held at Fergusson Park.
Is the Academy only for elite players?
No. The Academy is for players who are ready for more challenge and are committed to developing. Players do not need to be perfect, but they should be motivated, reliable and open to learning.
Can girls join the Academy pathway?
Yes. Female players have development opportunities through girls’ football, skill programmes, Pre-Academy, Academy and youth pathways.
What happens after Pre-Academy or TDP?
Players may continue into further development opportunities, youth football, Federation Youth pathways, college football or senior football depending on their age, ability and goals.
Who should I contact if I’m unsure which programme is right?
Contact the club and they can help guide you toward the right team, age group or development pathway for your player.
